About the event

From Augustine to Thomas Merton, Christianity is permeated with mystics as well as those who uphold doctrine and ritual, the exoteric religion. Mystics see reality as a deep but trustworthy mystery. They seek to disclose the deeper structures, reach the hidden ground, find the center, abide at the source. They wish to experience the intoxicating and tantalizing core of silent fire, the Life itself at the heart of all.

Join us as we sweep through the deeper musings of mystics of the western tradition. We will read brief excerpts and puzzle out their meanings in Zoom sessions twice each month, sharing insights and experiences in a safe circle.

Using the book, Light from Light: An Anthology of Christina Mysticism by Louis Dupré and James Wiseman, O.S.B., our six sessions on the third Sundays of the month will begin October 17th at 7 pm.

Oct 15: Gregory of Nyssa (335-395) and Psuedo-Dionysius (early sixth century).

Nov. 19: Frances and Clare of Assisi (early 13th century) and Bonaventure (1217-74).

Dec. 17: Meister Eckhart (1260-1329) and Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381)

Jan. 21: Julian of Norwich (1342-1416) ad The Cloud of Unknowing (14th century)

Feb. 18: Teresa of Avila (1515-82) and John of the Cross (1542-91)

March 17: Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941) and Thomas Merton (1915-68)

Our group's exploration is intended to deepen not only our understanding but also our spirituality by engaging both the head and the heart. It is not only an academic course. Our small group sessions will rely on Socratic dialogue and freedom of inquiry to spark both learning and growth.

PLEASE NOTE: Tuition amount is flexible. The suggested donation is $50 for the eight sessions. If this is not affordable (or you wish to offer more to support others who may wish to attend but do not have the funds), you can type any amount into the price box, starting with a minimum of $9.
