Each month, we will read and discuss a book: biographies, novels, fiction, non-fiction, science fiction, fantasy, wonder tales and memoires.

Stories can awaken wonder and insight, enlighten mind and quicken spirit. Discover long forgotten truths and awaken imagination. From month to month, the group will read "wonder tales": biographies of saints, stories of extraordinary consciousness and experiences mystical and profane.
The group meets monthly on the third Sunday at 7:00 pm for ten months, beginning February 20:
  • February 20: The Journey to the East, by Herman Hesse
  • March 20: By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept, by Paulo Coelho
  • April 17: Up A Tree, by Jane Burns
  • May 15: Don Juan and the Power of Medicine Dreaming: A Nagual Woman's Journey of Healing, by Merilyn Tunneshende
  • June 19: She Who Rose from the Ashes, by Sita Bennett
  • July 17: Memories, Dreams, Reflections, by C.G. Jung
  • August 21: In Sinu Jesu: When Heart Speaks to Heart, by A Benedictine Monk
  • September 18: My Master, by Swami Vivekananda
  • October 16: The Trebors, by Caroline Barney
Join us for this incredible journey. Tuition amount is flexible. Suggested is $45 for the nine sessions. If this is not affordable (or you wish to offer more to support others who may wish to attend but do not have the funds), choose the "By Donation" ticket and pay any amount. Sessions are by Zoom. Sign up today at https://www.hartsne.org/spiritual-journeys.html.

Silent Fire, a Zoom through the Western mystical tradition in ten sessions beginning January 9th. https://www.hartsne.org/silent-fire.html. Time is running out to register!

"In the highly symbolic and metaphorical language of the mystics, the center [of being, both within and without] is depicted as a poignant and awe-inspiring rhythm, an indelible pulsation, a majestic pathos, sometimes as cadenced as heartbeat or as spontaneous as wind, unruly as fire, and still as silence" --Walter Holden Capps and Wendy M. Wright in Silent Fire.

Paradox abounds in the writings of the mystics of the Western tradition. This is natural when talking about "center which is everywhere and the circumference which is nowhere".

Join us in a a five-month, online journey through the major writings and central figures of the Western mystical tradition. We will read short, concise essays of each author's life, work, and times, from the early medieval expressions through the 20th century, from Augustine of Hippo to Thomas Merton.

Sound and Spirit, December 2021

Dear Friends,

Thank you to all who attended our first in-person concert on November 20. Thanks to the musicians, Suhail Yusuf Khan and Pranav Ghatraju, for an amazing performance. Our Halcyon Music Institute Director, Michael Harrist, did a wonderful job with sound for which we are grateful. Our Treasurer, Seroya Crouch, attended, and so did a bunch of other Vermont folk who used to attend Stone Church Arts concerts. It was so supportive to see so many familiar faces. Thanks also to the Unitarian Universalist Society of Amherst for the use of their venue. It really is perfect for us.

Our next concert is coming up soon. Percussionist Fabio Pirozzolo and harpist Shelley Otis have combined their talents to form the duo Harpbeat. Both very talented musicians, together they explore elements of popular and world music. Tickets available now.

We do not yet have concerts planned for 2022, but we will announce some soon! We will likely skip January and February so we do not gamble with the weather, but keep an eye out for concerts in March and April.

We will be staring new online groups in January and February, however, and we invite you to join one or both. Silent Fire explores the mystics of the west from Augustine to Thomas Merton and begins January 9. Our second Spiritual Journeys group is forming and we will read a whole new set of wonder tales. Tuition by donation.

All the Best for the Holidays,
Beau

Groups vs. Classes

People have asked why groups instead of classes. Yes, a foundational component of our programs in spirituality is "groups". We have specifically adopted "groups" for may reasons.
  1. Our model of education is "growth and learning". It is not simply facts-based. It is not like school, as it is widely understood. Halcyon Institute of Spiritual Studies is conceived with personal growth as much as learning through small groups (fewer than 12, more often nine because, on an iPad, this is how many people can be seen on one screen of a Zoom call). People are tired of school. This is a different model, more along the lines of a wisdom school.
  2. Small groups more easily form community over time. Unlike lecture halls or even classrooms of twenty, thirty, or more, small groups provide the intimacy and opportunity to share insights and understandings that result in personal growth and a powerful sense of belonging. What I have come to call "a group field" develops, enfolding the participants in a sense of safety, trust and openness, an energy that enlivens.

This is why we have no grades. The basis for evaluation is showing up and participating, mostly just showing up. Only the participant can measure their personal growth and spiritual transformation.
Sometimes group process may be difficult. It can be challenging not only to think for oneself, but to struggle with those things that block personal growth, like ego, for example. In order for the transformational power of a group to work its magic, we need to become part of the group, and this means letting go of judgment and any sense of superiority. In time, the sense of belonging, the listening to others and the sharing of oneself, lead to new insights, transformational growth, and even a profound sense of joy. The power of group process cannot be underestimated.

I am grateful for the inspiration found in two books on group process:
  1. Wisdom Circles: A Guide to Self-Discovery and Community Building in Small Groups by Charles Garfield, and
  2. Calling the Circle: The First and Future Culture by Christina Baldwin
Neither of these books are new, but then neither is the perennial wisdom at the heart of the world's religions nor the act of gathering in a circle around a fire to share culture, wisdom and community.
